Windows and the "Print Screen" Key
(Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes approx, Level= Novice User)

Most of you would have seen it, would have pressed it...you would have poked at it...you might have even prodded it with a stick, just kidding! But nothing would have happened! I'm talking, of course, about that "Print Screen" button on your key board. Like me, you may have pressed it time and again and stared at your printer, waiting for a print out, unfortunately nothing ever comes out. While we usually think of a printer, a keyboard usually sends a print command to the computer's clipboard. Since the image is printed to your clipboard, it is then available to most image editing programs, such as Paint, Microsoft Word or other photo editors. You simply paste the saved image into the program by selecting paste from the menu selection.

Most versions of Microsoft Windows let you make a screen capture or "screenshot" using the "Print Screen" key.  This is usually located at the top of your keyboard above the Insert key.  Press "Print Screen" by itself to capture the entire screen.  Hold down the Alt key at the same time (Alt + Print Screen) to capture only the top window.

You can paste and save your screenshot into nearly any graphic editing program, like Paint or Photoshop.  You can also paste directly into a Microsoft Word document.  Paint is located in the Accessories program folder of your Start menu.
