How to browse the internet anonymously?

Proxy Servers

Now there are plenty of tricks depending on the needs of different people. Most of the common form is by use of proxy servers. Now for people who don't know what they are its just a simple computer (lets call this computer ProxyServer) sitting somewhere in maybe africa or India  and you are just talking to ProxyServer and in return it will feed you the web content. So instead of a request for a webpage from your computer to your internet service provider(comcast or dish) you make a connection to ProxyServer and ProxyServer will make your requests to its service providers in africa or india depending on where ProxyServer resides. Now that sounds pretty cool right? Now how do I find this ProxyServer? There are plenty of websites online that give you free access to these proxy servers. The best I found is here

However these free ProxyServer's are not fast enough for rich content like streaming or video content. These servers are good for anonymous browsing which require less data transfer like checking out the news, emails or just simple browsing on the internet. You may or may not be able to get to blocked websites if you are within an organizational network.

However if you are looking for fast proxy servers you might be interested in getting a paid connection to ProxyServer. Make sure you pay special attention to the speed and limit of the data transfer if you ever go that route.

Now lets look at how you con configure your browser to start using the internet via ProxyServer. Its simple.

Open Internet Explorer --> Click on Tools --> Internet options

Now click on the Connections Tab and then click on the LAN settings. If you did everything correctly so far you should see a screen like the one below. Now check the box that says "Use a proxy server for you LAN" and then type in the IP address of ProxyServer you obtained from one of the websites online. They should also give you a port number which you need to type in to your browser settings and you are done. Click ok and then Apply. Now you should be ready to test your connection with ProxyServer. Type any of your favorite web addresses and see if the web page comes up. If it does your the connection to the ProxyServer succeeded else you need to try a different ProxyServer.

Anonymizers: Using anonymizers is another way for an anonymous browsing session. However anonymizers are good for static browsing and would not support sessions that require you to sign in with your credentials for example emails or myspace or other websites that require you to sign in wouldn't work. However they are good for surfing other non personalized websites. Also there is no setting up on your behalf as this is completely web based. Most of the anonymizers come with a bit of advertising to support their costs.

Some popular anonymizers include:

www.hidemyass.com

http://anonymouse.org

Private Browser Mode: These days browsers are coming equipped with private browsing mode. What this modes does is whatever you browse is not stored in the browser history. It leaves no trace of your browsing session. It prevents storage of cookies, temporary internet files, user names and passwords and form data.

Its called an InPrivate Browsing mode in Internet Explorer browser and can be started using Ctrl+Shift+P or by going to Tools --> InPrivate Browsing.

In Google Chrome this private browsing mode is called the New Incognito window. and can be started using Ctrl+Shift+N or going under settings --> New Incognito window.
