Organizing Files
(Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes approx, Level= Novice User)

  •  Organize Files in Groups

This is one of the most unknown facts for many Windows XP users but hopefully not anymore. You can organize your folder view by right clicking an empty area and clicking on 'Arrange Icons by' ---> 'Show in Groups'. You have the option to create groups based on Name, Size, Type and Modified.

  •  Partition your hard disk (only for expert users - but you only get expert by doing things like these)

Also keep in mind that if you have multiple partitions there is a better chance that you can save your important files in a partition say 'D' during system crashes. I have 3 partitions on my computer C, D and E. I install most programs in C and when I am running out of space in C, I start installing programs in D. I use E for all kinds of important data like dumping Windows XP, Office, Drivers etc. Always make sure that you have enough disk space left on your primary windows partition which is usually 'C'. At least 1-1.5 GB of free space should always be present in C drive. Partition Magic is a software that can partition your hard disk without you losing any data. You can also partition a hard drive using fdisk from DOS, in which case you will lose all data before you can partition. Do this when you are fed up of bugs and crashes and want to format your operating system.

  •  Use Folders

Create different folders for different kinds of files. I organize my course material in different folders. For instance, I have folders named ISC 565 for Project Management, ISC 561 for Database Management related material and so on. It will help you later on when you are searching for a specific file.

  •  Don't Mess up your desktop

Do not have a lot of files on your desktop. It usually consumes your physical memory. Instead pin your applications in the start menu.

  •  Uninstall unused programs

You should keep your computer clean and without too many programs in it. Uninstall the programs you are not using and don't forget to delete the folder the application was installed in. Most uninstall applications do not delete the folder the application was installed in.
