To turn off indexing service

1) Click on Start ----> Search

2) In the Search companion window click on 'Change Preferences'

3) Now click on 'With Indexing Service (for faster local searches)' 

4) Make sure 'No, do not enable indexing service' is selected

5) Click  on 'OK'
