Disabling Auto-Protect Feature

Another way to gain performance is by disabling the auto-protect feature of the anti-virus. The disadvantage of doing this would be that the system is open for attacks. But what most people do is they do a virus scan on a weekly basis instead of the anti-virus protecting your computer all 24 hours.

Note: This might keep you at risk of real time virus attacks. Use this option only when you know that you are browsing safe.

Use older version of Windows Media Player

You can use the older version of Windows Media player to conserve your system resources drastically. The new Windows Media Player Series, the versions that came and after Windows ME consume more of your system resources than the version that came with Windows 98. If you want to use the old version of the Windows Media player goto Start ---> Run and then type 'mplayer2' without the quotes and the older version of Windows media player would pop up. To create a shortcut of this media player on the desktop browse My computer and goto C:\Windows and you will find mplayer.exe somewhere here. Right click on that file and then Send To  ---> Desktop.
