Getting rid of Thumbs.db file

Wondering what kind of file is that? Sounds to be some kind of virus or spyware. Gets attached in floppies, CD's or USB drives too. Actually there is nothing to worry. It's not a harmful file. It is generated by the operating system. It is basically a database file that consists of small images displayed when you view your folder in thumbnail view. There is no need to delete this file or even if you do there is no harm either. It is a cache file for your thumbnail pictures. You can however disable it from being created by following the below instructions:

  1. Go to 'Control Panel'

  2. Click on 'Folder Options'

  3. Click the 'View' tab

  4. In the 'Advanced Settings' check 'Do not cache thumbnails'

  5. Click on 'OK'

To delete the one's that have already been cached, do a search for 'Thumbs.db' file from Start ---> Search. Delete all the files by selecting all of them (Ctrl+A) and then right clicking and selecting 'Delete'

Using the Desktop Cleanup Wizard:

  1. Right-click on the desktop. Select ---> Arrange Icons By ---> Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard.

  2. The first screen of the Wizard will pop up. Click Next.

  3. Check the boxes of the shortcuts you no longer want to appear on the desktop.

  4. The unwanted icons will then be put in the 'Unused Desktop Shortcuts' folder on your desktop. You can always change your mind and restore the icons later.

Control Panel Icons on your Desktop:

  1. Go to Control Panel

  2. Right Click on the icon and click on 'Create Shortcut'

  3. You will get a prompt saying 'Windows cannot create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?'

  4. Click on 'Yes' and a shortcut will be created on the desktop
