What to do if your computer has frozen

Sometimes your computer hangs and there is nothing you can do Ctrl+Alt+Del or even pressing the power button on your computer to turn it off. What you need to do now is either remove the power supply or press the power button on your computer for a couple of seconds to forcefully shut power supply to your computer.

Note: This should be performed only if you know that your computer has frozen and there is no way out. You would of course lose unsaved information if you perform this operation. Its always wise to wait for a minute or two to make sure that the computer has really frozen

How to power off the computer automatically after shutdown?

Sometimes maybe after you reinstall windows you face a problem where your computer does not power off the computer automatically after you click on shutdown. Instead it shows you a screen where it says "It is now safe to turn off your computer". Most likely this would happen if ACPI is not enabled  on the computer. This is how to do it:

  1.  Click on Start --> Control Panel ---> Power Options

  2. Click on APM ---> Enable Advanced power management support

If this is already enabled, then try updating your display adapter drivers and see if it helps.

Clear PageFile on Windows Shutdown

"This security setting determines whether the virtual memory pagefile is cleared when the system is shut down.

Virtual memory support uses a system pagefile to swap pages of memory to disk when they are not used. On a running system, this pagefile is opened exclusively by the operating system, and it is well protected. However, systems that are configured to allow booting to other operating systems might have to make sure that the system pagefile is wiped clean when this system shuts down. This ensures that sensitive information from process memory that might go into the pagefile is not available to an unauthorized user who manages to directly access the pagefile.

When this policy is enabled, it causes the system pagefile to be cleared upon clean shutdown. If you enable this security option, the hibernation file (hiberfil.sys) is also zeroed out when hibernation is disabled on a portable computer system." excerpt from Microsoft

To enable this policy:

  1. Click on Start ---> Run

  2. Type "gpedit.msc" without quotes

  3. This will open the 'Group Policy' window

  4. Now navigate to Computer Configuration ---> Windows Settings ---> Security Settings ---> Local Policies ---> Security Options

  5. On the right pane look for 'Shutdown: Clear Virtual Memory Pagefile' and double click on it

  6. Click on 'Enabled' in the windows that pops up

  7. Click on OK
